Barcelona and F1 Pre Season Testing – Half Term Trip
You may/may not know this but I am an avid F1 fan. I have been since my childhood when on Sundays I’d watch live races on TV with my Dad. Now, in my adulthood, I still watch live races, except I now watch them with my son. He is a massive fan of AMG Mercedes, watching with awe at Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. He can never get enough.
Every year Lewis and Sam go to Silverstone to watch the British F1 GP as invited guests of my Dad who is a startline/pit lane marshal. They have an epic weekend and I still watch the race from home, keeping in the loop of all things F1 from the sofa. They love it, and it’s a great experience for Lewis too.
Now we have been in the winter break of F1, a couple of months where the drivers and teams relax a little bit but prepare for the next season. All fans can do is wait in anticipation of the first race of the year in March. But we couldn’t wait that long, we needed an F1 fix sooner than that.
In December I came across an advert on Facebook for tickets to the F1 pre-season testing which was to take place in Barcelona. Amazingly the first week of testing also took place during a half-term week, how could we resist not going?! So with the help of my Dad (and his amazing travelling knowledge), we booked 3 tickets for myself, my dad and Lewis. Then began the long wait until the February half term!
On the Thursday of half term, we headed off to Barcelona. An early flight out meant we were in the wonderful city for lunchtime. We initially headed off to our hotel, using public transport where a local pickpocketer decided to try and rummage around my handbag. Thankfully I caught him and he didn’t get my purse and we managed to continue, arriving at our hotel shortly after.
We then spent the afternoon enjoyed the sights and sounds of this wonderful Spanish city. We started by visiting the Cathedral of Barcelona (Sagrada Família). Then heading over the La Ramblas for a wander down this wonderful road, exploring markets and stores. Finishing off our exploration at the Port of Barcelona.
Whilst at the port we decided it was time to stop for tea. We discovered The Chipiron seafood restaurant overlooking Port Vell. We took a table on the outside balcony enjoying the end of the days sunshine. Sitting here gave us a fantastic view for our evening meal.
The big day finally arrived, the day Lewis had been waiting for since Christmas. The F1 Pre Season testing day. After a good nights sleep, we headed over to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. We enjoyed a day trackside, wandering the F1 paddock and enjoying a lunchtime saunter down the pit lane. We met team mechanics, crew members and even caught glimpses of drivers too. It was a fantastic day.
There’s really not much more I can say about our day without providing photographic evidence. So I’ll let the photos now do the talking. Enjoy!
All in all, we had a fantastic trip. Barcelona is amazing (albeit the pickpocketing incident) and we were very lucky with the weather.
