If your youngster heads out of the house each morning with a big smile on their face, it’s probably safe to assume that they enjoy their time at school. However, not all children are happy at school, especially every single day. Unfortunately, you can’t always rely on your child to open up and talk to you about how they’re feeling so it’s often left to guesswork. A prep school in Surrey have put together the following advice to help you determine whether or not your child is happy at school.

How to tell if my child is happy at school

Children have a lot to cope with at school; lots of different subjects, relationships with teachers and friends, school rules, extra-curricular activities and balancing all of that with their home life. Sometimes it can all be lots of fun, other times it can be stressful. It’s up to parents to keep an eye on their children and ensure they’re handling everything well.

There are lots of obvious signs that your child isn’t happy at school, like refusing to go in the mornings, general grumpiness, poor grades and withdrawal. Good communication between you and your child is of the utmost importance if you want to know what’s going on in their lives. Be sure to have one-to-one time with them each day so that you can discuss things like how they’re getting on at school and how their friends are. They might want to unwind a little bit after school so you should wait until a bit later when they feel more up for talking. Be sure to ask detailed questions that require more than a one-word answer.

If your child is being naughty all of a sudden, either at home or at school, it might be because they are unhappy about something and they’re crying out for attention. Try and find out why your child has behaved in this way rather than immediately punishing them. You should also work closely with their teachers so that you can come to a conclusion together about what might be going on and how to progress.
